Project Overview

CANDLE is an educational initiative designed to introduce climate change learning into Pakistan's formal school system. The curriculum provides students from Grades 1 to 10 with a foundational understanding of climate science, environmental change, biodiversity, nature-based systems, sustainable lifestyles, and climate adaptation. The programme is structured to ensure that students engage with climate concepts in a way that is simple, practical, and age-appropriate. Through classroom lessons, interactive activities, and guided discussions, CANDLE helps young learners understand how climate change affects their communities, ecosystems, livelihoods, and future. By integrating climate education into mainstream schooling, CANDLE moves beyond awareness-building and supports long-term behavioral change, encouraging students to become responsible environmental citizens and future climate leaders.

Strategic Objective

To build climate literacy among school students by embedding structured, age-appropriate climate change education within Pakistan's formal education system, enabling the next generation to understand climate risks, protect natural ecosystems, and contribute to climate adaptation and sustainable development.

Key Components

  • Introductory climate change curriculum for Grades 1–10
  • Age-appropriate lessons on climate science and environmental change
  • Classroom activities focused on sustainability and climate action
  • Biodiversity and ecosystem awareness modules
  • Learning content on nature, diversity, livelihoods, and resilience
  • Teacher-supported implementation in schools
  • Climate education across government and private schools
  • Practical activities to encourage environmental responsibility
  • Student engagement around local climate risks and solutions
  • Scalable curriculum model for wider adoption in Pakistan's education system

Anticipated Outcomes

Improved Climate Literacy

Students gain a clear, foundational understanding of climate change, its causes, impacts, and relevance to their everyday lives.

Stronger Environmental Awareness

Young learners develop greater awareness of nature, biodiversity, ecosystems, and the importance of protecting the environment.

Climate-Responsible Behavior

The programme encourages students to adopt sustainable habits and become more conscious of their role in reducing environmental harm.

School-Based Climate Engagement

CANDLE enables schools to become active spaces for climate learning, awareness, and student-led environmental action.

Support for Climate Adaptation

By educating the next generation, the programme contributes to Pakistan's broader climate adaptation and resilience-building efforts.

Scalable Education Model

The pilot and ongoing implementation provide a strong foundation for expanding climate education across more schools, districts, and provinces.

Why This Project Matters

CANDLE is designed to become a national model for climate change education in Pakistan, helping embed climate literacy into the learning journey of students from an early age. By combining WeatherWalay's climate intelligence expertise with TRC's educational experience, and with the support of the U.S. Consulate, the programme aims to prepare a generation that is informed, responsible, and ready to contribute to a more climate-resilient and sustainable Pakistan.
